review: MAC DEMARCO – THIS OLD DOG

Almost no one sounds as relaxed as Mac Demarco. The guy with the gap between his teeth sings about his beloved dog and the moon light over the river – how corny can it get? He acts like the Huckleberry Finn of indie music, on and off-stage.
This Old Dog“ is his third and his softest album yet. He switches from an electric guitar to acoustic guitars and makes heavy use of synthesizers, as he did on his fantastic „Another One“-EP. Although his songs are very simple you don’t notice that right from the beginning. “Baby You’re Out” tumbles beautifully through its chord changes like a football falling down a stairwell that manages to hit every fourth step. “One Another” twinkles like an earlier generation’s soda jingle, with a little slouch that invites finger snaps with every backbeat.

It is certainly not his best record, or a very exciting one – but still a very good one!
